Abstract
A number of the implications regarding the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence are discussed. The Drake equation is introduced and some values for the established parameters suggested, a further parameter is proposed. Some of the principle arguments for and against extraterrestrial life are discussed. It is acknowledged that we have already announced our existence to any nearby technological civilisations and that not to anticipate contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence would be unwise. It is suggested that extraterrestrial life is possibly quite abundant, however the prospect of life on Earth being unique is also recognized.
